Crude oil geyser discovered in placemines Parish swamp

Plaucke Parish, La. (WVUE) -A photographer says that he saw how a “geyser” of crude oil broke out of a swamp near the production facility of Garden Island Bay, while the coast guard crews and operators work to contain a leak that began over the weekend in the municipality of the lower plasquemines.

The US Coast Guard confirmed Sunday and says that clean -up work is now being carried out in the distant Marshland near the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The photographer Matthew White, who shared pictures of the scene with Fox 8, said that he had noticed something unusual while driving near the website.

“When we approach it, it was obvious that it was oil,” said White. “It was crude oil that was like a geyser in the air.”

White said the smell of oil and the sound of a hissing leak were noticeable from a distance of about a mile.

The leaky fountain is operated by Spectrum Arco, which, according to the coast guard, helps the seal of the fountain and the container of the spill.

So far, the responders have recovered about 9,500 gallons fatty water from the region. Officials say that they monitor the environmental impact, but have not yet received any confirmed reports about the wild animals concerned.

Nevertheless, the coast guard has activated a hotline for wild animals and urges everyone who sees oiled animals to call 832-514-9663.
