At least 62 killed and dozens that are missing after flooding in the eastern Congo

The authorities said that several villages along the banks of the Tanganyika lake rinsed strong floods after heavy rains in the eastern Congo and missed at least 62 deaths and 50 on Saturday.

Witnesses described the floods that climbed on Friday at 5 a.m. at 5 a.m. and swept away the village of Kasaba on the edge of the lake in the Ngandja sector.

The Health Minister of South Kivu, Théophile Walulika Muzaliwa, said by phone that the rescue company was hindered by a lack of services and the switch -off of the telephone lines due to the floods.

“Sector bosses, village bosses and local bosses who are also members of the local government are on site. The only humanitarian organization is currently the Red Cross. It is not possible to make an assessment because the body calculation continues,” he said.

Last month, the floods in the capital Kinshasa killed 33 people.

Decades of fighting between government troops and rebels in the Eastern Congo escalated in February and deteriorated one of the world's greatest humanitarian crises.
