Pasadena Heritage Tour underlines the influence of Asia on art and craft architecture – Pasadena Weekend

Pasadena Heritage will organize a guided bus trip on Saturday, May 10th and investigate the important Asian influences that have contributed to defining Pasadena's unmistakable art and craft architecture. The tour from 10:30 a.m. in the Blinn House aims to pursue the migration of architectural ideas across cultures and periods, from traditional Asian wood structures to iconic Pasadena.

“What makes Pasadena Craftsman Architecture characteristic is to a large extent, the Asian influence on it,” says Dave Nufer, board member, program developer and Docent with Pasadena Heritage, when asked why this connection was selected as particularly significant. “This presentation deals with the migration of cultural ideas in cultures and about the times. In this presentation, we start developing the traditional Asian wooden architecture in China, such as you to Japan and then to the USA and South California, Pasadena, and how these ideas develop in Pasadena over time.”

The tour will highlight some outstanding examples of this architectural fusion, starting with the Duncan Irwin House by Greene & Greene, where the architects began to develop their classic Asian -influenced style. The participants also visit the famous Gamble House, the Blacker House and the House of the Culbertson Sisters, all of which were designed by Greene & Greene, as well as the Freeman House by Heinmann and Heinmann as well as the Thompson and Lee House.

Modern structures from the middle of the century are also presented, including Homes from Buff & Hensman, Richard Nora and Craig Elwood as well as numerous examples of craftsman-bungalows in Himmel from Bungalow and elsewhere in Pasadena.

These Asian influences are shown in signature elements such as low roofs, harmony with nature, meticulous craftsmanship and spatial planning concepts that would define Pasadena's architectural identity. According to Pasadena Heritage studies, Charles and Henry Greene were exposed to Japanese pavilions at the world mass of 1893, which significantly influenced their architectural approach.

Nufer compares this phenomenon with the merger kuisine: “We often talk and think about the merger kuisine, which combines ideas from a number of different national cuisine in Pasadena. To a certain extent, the Asian influence on American art and craftsman architecture, is able to enable the ideas of Fusions architecture for Asian and in the conditions in the USA. 20th century with craftsmen, handicrafts by the middle of the century.

“And this only reflects the intercultural exchange that you have in the past today,” added Nufer.

The tour begins in the historic blink of House in the 160 N. Oakland Ave., which today serves as the headquarters of the Pasadena Heritage. Pasadena Heritage was founded in 1977 and works to preserve the city's diverse architectural heritage through advocacy, education and tours.
