Cyclists killed with garbage trucks after collision

A cyclist was killed with a garbage trolley in Atherton on Wednesday morning, the city officials said.

The crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. when the garbage truck drove south on the Middlefield Road and turned right onto the previous Lane when he collided with the cyclist, who drove south in the designated bike Lane.

Athermon's chief of police, Steven McCulley, granted the accident and called him a tragic incident.

What you say:

“In the name of the entire police department team and the city of Atherton, I expand our warm condolence to family, friends and members of the victim. No words can alleviate the pain of such a devastating loss, but please know that our thoughts are with you in this incredibly difficult time,” said McCulley.

He said the department examines the circumstances before the accident.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors in the crash.

McCulley also said that the officers will increase the enforcement measures along the corridor, where the collision occurred “to draw bicycle, pedestrian and vehicle security more attention”, and that the municipality's department will provide more education via bicycle, pedestrian and vehicle safety.

“I would like to assure our community that we take this tragedy seriously. We have to work together – city departments, private partners and residents – to ensure that such an avoidable loss does not take place again,” said McCulley.

It is unclear whether the garbage car driver worked in the name of the city of Atherton.

KTVU turned to the Menlo Atherton High School and the Sequoia Union School District, but did not hear in the time before the publication.
