Why the family of Detroit Mann, who were killed by the police shootout, demands justice

DETROIT – The family of a man from Detroit, who was killed at a shootout with Michigan State Police, spoke on Monday morning with the local 4th place and said they were looking for justice.

The shootout occurred in the 20,000 block of Murray Hill near the lodge and 8 miles, shortly after 4:30 a.m. on May 5, 2025.

According to the Michigan state police, the soldiers who were assigned to his car theft team were involved, and a 23-year-old man from Detroit was killed during the shot.

Dameka Gray said she learned that her cousin was shot after her aunt screaming her.

“I just ran out of the house and ran to her,” said Gray. “He was a treasure.”

“Talk to your people as you are here,” she said as she fought through tears. “It's not a good feeling. It's not like that.”

Tony Hunter spoke to Local 4 about the death of his younger brother.

“He looked up to me, I looked up at him,” he said. “He didn't do anything wrong.”

He said his brother was sitting on the veranda of her house when a non -marked police car drove up.

“My little brother called my name; he called me to get out,” recalled Hunter. “As soon as I started running, I only hear shots.”

Hunter said his brother was not the guy who pulls out a gun and shoots the police. “This is not my brother. It's not him,” he said.

“These police officers did not get marked, no vests,” he continued. He said the police did not know who they were until they shot his brother.

“They waited until my little brother was already in the middle of the street to create a vest,” said Hunter.

“We will definitely get justice for it,” said Hunter's sister. “Justice for my brother. My brother live.”

The man's family said that he was a night owl, “a protector” and often stayed wake up late. “He watches over his family,” said a family member.

During a press conference on May 5, shortly after 8 a.m., the Michigan state police first reported that the soldiers in the area worked hidden when the 23-year-old man came out of a house and was said to be shot three times with the soldiers. The police later sent a correction and said the man jumped out of his car and shot an unknown amount of rounds on soldiers.

State troops returned fire and killed the Detroit man. A soldier was shot in the leg, back and the vest.

The Trooper shot was received for Detroit for treatment and received the hospital. The police said Local 4 that the soldier is in a serious condition, but it is expected that it is okay.
