US President Donald Trump reacted to the call from Russian President Vladimir Putin's “direct” conversations with Ukraine and described it as a “potentially great day”.

Putin invited Kyiv to take part in “serious negotiations” to “draw on a permanent, strong peace” while he spoke out of Kremlin on Sunday.

He did not respond to the urge from Great Britain and European leaders to agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine from Monday.

Trump wrote about the truth that this was “a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine”.

“Think of the hundreds of thousands of life that are saved because this never ends 'bloodbath' will hopefully come to an end. It will be a completely new and much better world,” he said. “I will continue to work with both sides to ensure that this happens. The United States wants to concentrate on the reconstruction and trade instead. A big week!”
