Mesa birth center could not properly monitor the fetal heartbeat before death

Mesa, AZ – A Mesa Birth Center has promised changes after the state supervisory authorities found that the center did not ensure that the staff properly monitored the fetal heartbeat in at least one case.

As the previously reported investigators from ABC15 reported, the Willow Midwife Center for Birth & Wellness exposed two litigation last year in the event of an incorrect death.

The regulatory authorities of the Arizona Department of Health Services inspected Willow in February this year. They found that Willow did not ensure that his midwives carried out fetal heart tone controls during a birth in June 2023 at the required intervals.

The guideline of the facility required the checks to take place every 10-15 minutes during the second level. ADHD found that administrators did not ensure that Willow's employees followed “to protect the health and security of a patient”.

According to ADHD online records, the review of the fetal heart tones according to the direction of the facility “is the risk of delaying the identification of fetal stress, which leads to potential complications such as the oxygen withdrawal to the baby, which can lead to brain damage or other neurological problems if they are not addressed immediately.”

According to the family's lawsuit, this baby from the birth incident in June 2023 died against Willow. The lawsuit ended in an agreement in December 2024.

The birth system had submitted a plan for correction details and training changes to ensure that these important sign tests occur if necessary.

In the following you will find a unique online tool that can search for families to combine information from the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Arizona Board of Nursing. Both agencies regulate midwives, although everyone has different rules for the training of midwives, the scope of practice and supervision.
