Iran important stopover for migratory birds

Iran is the most important country in West Asia in terms of housing hiking birds in winter, since every year around two million birds fly to spend winter in the country's wetland, according to an official of the Ministry of the Environment.

Iran comprises numerous wetlands, reservoirs and various waters and welcomes millions of migratory birds every year. The country has also turned out to be the most important stopover for migratory birds in its flight route from Siberia, since sixteen percent of them choose to spend the winter in the country, quoted Isna Hassan Akbari.

A diverse selection of migratory birds flies into the country, with more than 160 types of water and water birds being identified in Iran, which is a significant number.

Despite limited water resources in the country's domestic habitats, the investigation of the trend of the migratory bird population shows that the abundance and diversity of the birds that enter the country did not go back. However, most of them flew into the coastal areas of the Caspian and Persian Gulf.

According to Akbari, Iran organizes more than five percent of the birds wandering worldwide in 450 locations in winter.

“Every year around 30 to 40 million birds are counted, and the associated statistics are recorded in the IWC database (International Watervowl Census),” he added.
