NBA Draft Lottery: Cavaliers and Magic have landed the top selection in the 40-year history of the event

Patrick Ewing was ready to be number 1 in the NBA draft 40 years ago when Commissioner David Stern began with the first draft of the lottery by getting a logo of the Golden State Warriors out of an envelope – which would indicate that they would choose the seventh place.

Pat O'Brien, who announced for CBS, announced: “And the first team to hate the lottery.”

Now the question is who will be the next team that hates the lottery. Maybe Utah, Washington or Charlotte? Each has a league-best 14%chance to choose first this year.

The Associated Press checked the lottery history of the individual franchise. Here are a few highlights and lowlights:

– Most lottery wins. The record for lottery wins is four of Cleveland and Orlando. The Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and San Antonio received the top election three times.

– No lottery wins. Eight franchise companies have never won the lottery: the grizzlies, heat, jazz, laker, Mavericks, Nuggets, Pacers and Donner. Dallas, Denver and Memphis had particularly unhappy, and Minnesota had a brutal lottery record before he finally had number 1 in 2015 and 2020.

– Longest long shots. Orlando achieved the top election in 1993 despite a probability of 1.5%. Chicago in 2008 and Cleveland in 2014 had a chance of 1.7%when they won.

– Best chances on Monday. Every team in the lottery had the same chance to choose number 1 in the first few years. Then a weighted system was introduced. After the victory of Orlando in 1993, the teams at the top of the lottery had somewhat better chances, but lately it has returned a little. According to Utah, Washington and Charlotte this year, New Orleans (12.5%), Philadelphia (10.5%), Brooklyn (9%), Toronto (7.5%), San Antonio (6.7%), Houston (3.8%) and Portland (3.7%), Dallas (1.8%), Chicago (1.7%).

-Crord warriors. For a large part of the history of the lottery, there was a border for how far teams can fall, so that nobody went back in 1985 like Golden State.
