Australian auxiliary workers killed in Ukraine

An Australian volunteer was killed when he worked for a humanitarian organization in Ukraine.

This was confirmed on Monday by the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“Out of respect for the privacy of the family and in accordance with our obligations, there is a limit for what we can say publicly at this point. I can confirm that he did not take part in the conflict (the war in Ukraine – ed.) He was voluntary with a humanitarian organization,” Albanese told reporters.

Albanese said that the department for foreign matters supported the man's family, but did not provide any details.

In a report, the Australian Radio Corp said, citing an unidentified military source in Ukraine, the man and his British colleague died near Iziium, Kharkiv region, from injuries that had suffered as an improved explosive device in a building.

The Australian man worked together for the programs based in the USA, said the ABC. The organization supports the Ukrainian government agencies with country mines, medical trauma and humanitarian aid.

As reported by Ukrinform, the news turned out last week that Chris Garrett, a 40-year-old British volunteer, who was involved in the Mine Clearance efforts, was killed in Ukraine.

Garrett was the founder of Prevail Together, an organization that is dedicated to humanitarian work. According to the organization, he and several team members were seriously injured in an incident near Izium.
