LR: Cecilia Dapaah, Sammy Gyamfi and Victoria Hammah

In the political history of Ghana, numerous scandals that have shaken politicians have attracted national attention and dominated public discourse, mainly because of the seriousness and the far -reaching effects of some of these incidents.

Such a category of scandals includes foreign currencies, in particular the US dollar, which has often triggered intensive public debates and examination.

While some of these political scandals quickly fade without attracting a significant public examination, others, such as those who refer to the US dollar, are often exceptions – the national conversations often exist over longer periods of time, which leads to official sanctions and in more serious cases, which deals with the relief of those who deal in such affairs.

This article from Ghanaweb takes a look at some of these scandals in connection with foreign currencies.

Sammy Gyamfi

The reigning managing director of the Ghana Gold Board and National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, made headlines after he has given an amount of about $ 800 of fetish-priest-pastor patricia assia, known as Nana Agradaa.

In a video that was shared on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Gyamfi was seen next to his Range Rover and took a photo with Nana Agradaa, which had her arm around him while she had locked herself in a short conversation.

In the video in the center of the controversy, Nana Agradaa can be heard, which Sammy Gyamfi makes a remark and asks him to open the back door of a vehicle. Then he sits down and begins to count several US dollar bills before handing over part of the money.

Agradaa, apparently dissatisfied, picks up and grabs all grades from Gyamfi's hands.

She goes away and shows the dollar bills to viewers and bravely explains: “I have taken a dollar in collar.”

Since then, the NDCstalwart has been under intensive counter -reaction to the public, with some demanding its discharge.

Cecilia Dapapaah

Another remarkable example of a scandal in which foreign currency is involved is the case of the former Minister for Sanitary and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapapaah, which was under intensive public examination in 2023 after revelations of a reported theft in her AbelemkPE residence.

According to media reports, two house helps to stolen in allegedly considerable sums – including one million US dollars, as well as not mentioned amounts in euros and Ghana Cedis – in the course of their employment.

Official fee sheets also stated that the accused beyond Madam Dapaah, including luxury clothing, handbags, perfumes and jewelry, was brought away with personal items beyond the money. The value of the stolen non-cash articles was reported on $ 95,000 and $ 95,000 estimated, which shocked many shocked and questions about the source and the securing of such large sums of money in a private residence.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah sent her resignation from the office. In her letter of withdrawal, she explained that her decision was motivated by the desire to protect the government from further reputation damage, since the controversy around the stolen means had started to throw a shadow about the image and integrity of the administration.

Victoria Lakshmi Hammah

In 2013, a former deputy Minister of Communications, Victoria Hammah, was the focus of national attention after leaking an audio recording, in which she allegedly explained that she would not leave politics until she earned a million US dollar.

In the recording that it was assumed that she was a private conversation with another woman, Hammah openly spoke about her motivations to enter politics, her perceived influence within the government and the role of lithurs in the NDC management at that time.

The controversy led to considerable public counter reactions and finally led to its release from the office of then President John Dramani Mahama.

Some of the things that prescribe the recording contained the following: “I understand politics very well. If I don't earn a million dollars, I would not go and attack people. If you have money, you can control people.”
