Trump's tariffs for Canada debate about the US trade: Do the USA need Canada?

Follow live updates for the Trump management here.

President Trump had a big question in his head when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney went to Washington last week.

“I want to work with him very much, but I can't understand a simple truth,” said Mr. Trump in a social media post and repeated some options, as he believes that Canada benefits from his trade relationship with the United States.

The president also repeated his false assertion that the United States “subsidize” in the amount of 200 billion US dollars, which alludes to the country's trade deficit with Canada, which is the value of what the United States imports minus their exports.

In fact, according to US data, the trade deficit was 63.3 billion dollars last year. And when Canada's energy exports have been moved out, it becomes a commercial surplus.

For Mr. Trump, everything is going on one point: Do the United States need Canada?

Mr. Trump's resounding answer is no, and he has imposed many Canadian goods tariffs.

“We don't need your cars, we don't need your energy, we don't need your wood, we need nothing other than your friendship,” he said in the social media post.
