2025 NBA Draft Lottery: Dallas Mavericks deserve number 1 in the middle of the competition for Duke Star Cooper Flagg

The Dallas Mavericks won the Cooper Flag competition.

The Mavericks received number 1 in the NBA Draft Lottery 2025 in Chicago on Monday evening. While you can certainly go a different direction or hand in the top selection, the Mavericks are now able to select Flagg in the NBA design in June.

Flagg is the consensus No. 1 of the total sial in this year's design class. The 18-year-old led Duke to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament at the beginning of this season, even though they were eliminated by Houston. Flag scored an average of 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game with the Blue Devils, while he received the “Player of the Year” award. Assuming that he goes first, Flag would be the first American to have made number 1 in the overall selection since Paolo Banchero in 2022.

The Mavericks that have never won the lottery will now be selected first after their breathtaking trade to bring Luka Dončić the Los Angeles Lakers – who pulled an immense amount of setbacks from the fans. But now, just a few months after this decision, the Mavericks have the chance to design another potential superstar to replace it.

Utah Jazz (17-65), Washington Wizards (18-64) and Charlotte Hornets (19-63) had the best chance of securing number 1 in 14%. The Mavericks had only one chance of 1.8%to claim No. 1.

The Bottom-14 finishers in the regular season were used for the lottery and received the opportunities for number 1 of the overall selection, based on their records. The jazz, wizards and hornets had the best shot. The New Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers each had a better chance of 10%.

In the actual selection process, the NBA notes:

Fourteen ping pong balls with 1 to 14 numbers are placed in a lottery machine. There are 1,001 possible combinations if four balls from 14 years are drawn regardless of their selection order. Before the lottery, 1,000 of these 1,001 combinations are assigned to the 14 participating lottery teams.

The drawing process takes place in the following way: All 14 balls are placed in the lottery machine and mixed for 20 seconds, and then the first ball is removed. The remaining balls are mixed for another 10 seconds in the lottery machine, and then the second ball is drawn. There is a 10-second mixture, and then the third ball is pulled. There is a 10-second mixture, and then the fourth ball is pulled. The team that was assigned this combination receives the No. 1 selection. The same process is repeated for the second to fourth picks with the same ping pong balls and lottery machines.

As soon as the top 5 have been determined by the lottery process, the rest of the draft of the first round is determined by the reverse order of the regular season records of the remaining team. The entire design command for round 2 is determined by the reverse order of the regular season record of each team.
