Parents 'sick with concern' due to a lack of transparency in connection with hip surgery scandal

Parents are “sick of concern” while waiting for the government, how many children have subjected unnecessary hip operations, the Dáil heard.

The leaders of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, accused the government of avoiding questions, and asked the Taoisach to immediately state how many letters to families were sent in relation to operations that were carried out until 2010.

Ms. McDonald said Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris had refused to answer questions about the scandal and to “stone” the parents from both the government and child health.

Health Minister Jennifer Carroll Macneill said that the letters were issued to grant the parents to calm about the current examination in hip dysplasia procedures, but Ms. McDonald said the letters had the opposite effect.

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín also met with the “painful absence of information” that is available to the parents. He said:

The questions you want include how this happened and how hospitals can perform a certain operation at a speed of five to ten times higher than the country's population, and nobody picked it up.

Mr. Martin recognized the concerns that the parents have, but it would be wrong to drip information in front of the audit, in front of the audit, which he said, could be published in an advanced stage.

He said it was necessary to communicate with the parents about an examination report.

“I can't draw any conclusions until I see the final report,” said Martin. “The effects are worrying when some of the claims come home to be the case, in other words if they appear truthful.”
