Cleveland's Safer Street's initiative sees a reduction in crime

According to the latest figures, a program for safer streets of the Interior Ministry has led to a crime in a northeast community.

In the initiative in Cleveland, which was completed on Monday, March 31, more than 3.44 million GBP have been invested in the region in the past five years.

The money was distributed with “significant” results in all four Cleveland Boroughs – Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Redcar and Cleveland.

The first phase of the safer roads in 2020-21 led to a “significant” reduction in the burglaries in targeted areas.

In Burn Valley, Hartlepool, burglary fell by 40 percent in 2020-21 compared to the previous year, while South Bank decreased by 49 percent.

CCTV was installed as part of the Safer Street 2 in Stockton, helped with 94 arrests over a period of eight weeks in 2022 and made it possible for the Cleveland police to react to a further 498 incidents.

The safer roads 4 in 2022-23 led to a reduction in anti-social behavior (ASB) in Pallister Park and Hemlington, Middlesbrough.

The reports on arson and criminal damage in these areas also decreased by 47 percent, and the crimes of public order decreased by 39 percent.

The last program Safer Streets, Safer Street 5, focused on areas near the city center of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Stockton.

During the program in 2024-25, ASB reports fell by up to 38 percent, according to Portrack, Tillery and Ropner.

In Middlesbrough the reports on crimes in the neighborhood in central, Longlands and Beechwood took back by 16 percent.

In Hartlepool, the safer roads 5 became a reduction in the Fly tip frame by 60 tons, a decline of 13.2 percent, which saves the Council 6,000 GBP in disposal costs.

Matt Storey, police and criminal officer from Cleveland, said: “Safer roads were an extremely successful program.

“The OPCC and its partners made it possible to invest additional resources in the areas that they needed most.

“Many thanks to everyone involved who contributed to making safer roads such a success.

“All of our partners have put a large number of work in the past five years to have things done.
