What doctors say about Jayson Tatum Achilles injury – NBC Boston

The Boston Celtics are just a loss of excretion, but the bad news goes beyond the search for a repeat championship.

Jayson Tatum was operated on Tuesday to repair a Achilles tendon after he had suffered the injury in the last minutes of the game on Monday evening.

Medical experts who spoke to NBC10 Boston said that the operation itself is fast, but Tatum is a long way to recovery.

“The operation is short, but in the period after the operation, athletes are usually immobilized in a trunk or a line -up for about six to eight weeks, followed by physiotherapy to restore their movement and strength,” said Dr. Amy Brown, expert in sports medicine and an orthopedic surgeon in the Tufts Medical Center.

The Celtics are operated on for the rest of the playoffs without superstar Jayson Tatum with the season in question to repair an Achilles tendon.

Although it is not associated with Tatum's medical case, Brown is familiar with the type of injury and the length of recovery.

“Usually between six and nine months, but sometimes up to a year,” she said. “But the forecast is excellent.”

Dr. Gregory Waryasz, head of foot and ankle sports medicine in the Massachusetts General Hospital, said he did about two or three Achilles operations a week, and they usually last about an hour.

“It is a long recovery, and people usually use a little explosiveness, which is important,” he said. “The patient is better off with modern techniques, but people usually lose a little step. But hopefully he has a great training staff there.”

Dr. Fernando Raduan, head of foot and ankle sports medicine program at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, also stressed the recovery process.

“We usually say that after about nine months we can be in top form again,” he said. “Sometimes some athletes can do this a little faster than to get eight.”

Raduan said the Achilles was the strongest tendon in the body.

“It is responsible for transferring all the strength from the calf muscle to the foot,” he said. “The eccentric contraction of the muscles, when you step back to accelerate forward. So if you step back, the tendon extends. At the same time, you relate to the muscles to go forward – precisely when you put a lot on the tendon on the tendon, the tendon, and the tension and tears can sometimes no longer be kept up to date and tension.”
