The shadow tree has been an important refuge for women and children in Las Vegas, domestic violence, human trafficking and homelessness since 1989.

This refuge was damaged and led the animal shelter to contact the community to get help with the fundraising campaign “Ascent and Restoration”. The goal of the campaign is 5 million US dollars to complete the repairs

The damage began with a number of small water leaks at the end of last year in the facility near West Owens Avenue and the Main Street, which was originally repaired, said Linda Perez, CEO of Shade Tree, on Tuesday at an event in which the fundraising campaign was announced.

At the beginning of January a much more serious leak occurred and caused extensive damage in all floors, with the first and second floors – the essential rooms such as the common room and the sleeping area – were particularly affected.

During the repair efforts it became clear that the drainage system of the building did not work and the sanitary system was short of the completely failure, said Perez.

“A very important part of our mission is to offer services that promote stability, dignity and independence. In the shadow tree, we are working very hard to start the process of restoring these three lifelong properties from the moment our customers come through our doors,” said Perez. “A large part of it is to offer a dignified life experience while they are with us, and that is what we work with this campaign – the stability and dignity of this building and the surrounding campus restore.”

According to Perez, the animal shelter had an increase in people who were looking for services, and customers remained an average of 90 days or 120 days if they are a surviving human trafficking. It helps between 1,000-1,500 families every year, she said.

It has living areas with bedrooms, a children's activity center and a computer laboratory for the development of the workforce. The Shade Tree also offers services such as case management and apartment investigations.

Perez emphasized that Shade Tree had not rejected women or families due to construction and the services for customers were not discontinued. You simply pulled the services around the construction, including the addition of a temporary “state of art”, laundry, the shower and the bathroom.

The Penta Building Group does the work.

“When we heard that the shadow tree had challenges in its main facility, we wanted to get in the organization of a really good charity.

Perez remains positive and points to at least one blessing in the disguise.

Due to this unexpected renovation, the shadow tree can transform its living beds from barracks in cabins that offer families more privacy.

So far, over $ 480,000 of materials and workers have been donated to the Shade Treee project, said Karyn Steenkamp, Vice President for Design and Construction at Caesars Entertainment, Inc. and Chairman of the Shade Tree Board of Trustees.

It is not yet known how much the damage cost the shadow tree, but Perez wants to collect 5 million US dollars next year to completely open the shelter.
