Mrbeast faces the Mexican temple video

On May 10, the American YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known as Mrbeast, released a video entitled “I survived 100 hours in an old temple” in which he examined archaeological sites in Mexico, including Chichén Itzá, Calakmul and Balankanché. He claimed that he would use a drone to see the interior of the temple of Kukulcán, an area with limited access.

Accordingly MilenioThe video quickly became viral, collected more than 52 million calls in less than three days and generated debates about social media about its access to restricted areas.

Many users of X (formerly Twitter) asked why Donaldson was allowed to record if Mexican citizens and even researchers were denied this access. One comment was: “Mexicans are forbidden to enter our ruins, but a millionaire foreigner can do what he wants.” Another user said: “It makes me angry that he can enter the pyramids and that we as real Mexicans will never be able to enter.”

Some comments accused the authorities of having approved the rules, since Donaldson is an international personality with millions of followers. “How much money did he pay to get there? Welcome to the world of corruption,” wrote a user. Others pointed out that even researchers have no access to the areas where Donaldson toured.

In response to criticism, the Mexican National Institute for Anthropology and History (Inah) made an explanation in which Donaldson's visit and recording was carried out with the corresponding permits, which were managed by the Federal Secretariat of Tourism and the State Governments of Yucatán and Campeche and under Institutional supervision.

Inah found that his staff supervised the recording to ensure that care and security measures were respected in order to ensure no effects on the archaeological heritage. The Inah made it clear that no drone flights were carried out in El Castillo in Chichén Itzá, in which it was found that “such a flight was carried out outside the structure”, and denied that Donaldson's team from a helicopter at the location from a helicopter. They emphasized that “the video alludes extensive audiovisual post -production work and events that have not occurred”, including false claims, to descend from a helicopter.

The Mexican federal law on archaeological, artistic and historical monuments and zones prohibits climbing or harmful structures at most archaeological sites, a measure that was carried out by Inah for preservation and security in 2008. Mexican legislation determines punishments that range from economic terms to prison terms for damage or interventions in the cultural heritage, with the fines vary between 5,000 and 50,000 pesos depending on the crime. However, Calakmul is one of the few areas in which climbing certain structures is still permitted, and there are at least three Maya structures in which the stone stairs can rise. Donaldson also visited Chichén Itzá and Balankanché, where there are stricter restrictions.

The Inah specified that the mask seen in the video is a current reproduction, not a pre -dispanic artifact. They indicated that the tours were mainly carried out through areas with public access and did not influence the entry of other visitors, including a visit to the substructure of Building II in Calakmul, which is accessible by prior agreement. The filming permits were officially requested by official institutions from the States Campeche and Yucatán, which were managed by the Federal Secretariat of Tourism and processed the legal requirements for filming in archaeological zones before the national coordination of the legal matters.

Donaldson started his career on the platform with videos about video games and entertainment content. He became famous for organizing extreme challenges, donating large sums of money and performing philanthropic acts. His channel broke records for the number of views and the virality of its videos.

In addition to his success on the video platform, Mrbeast has expanded his brand to other business projects. He founded initiatives such as Beast Burger, a chain of virtual restaurants, and took part in non -profit causes such as cleaning the sea and the support of disadvantaged communities. His entertainment style, which combines action, generosity and large productions, has attracted attention worldwide and has made it one of the most influential figures in the digital area.
