Officials publish the cause of death for the Bay High School Lacrosse player who was injured on the field

Cleveland, Ohio – officials say that a lacrosse player of the Bay High School died of a serious injury to the head last week.

The 16 -year -old Dylan Veselic suffered from a “blunt force craniocervical injury”, which means that he was hit on the skull near the neck, said Christopher Harris, a spokesman for the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office. He died of the consequences of an accident.

On May 6th, Veselic was fatally injured during a game against Olmsted Falls on the Lacrosse field.

Since then, the Bay High team has canceled the rest of his season and has been locked up from the local lacrosse community and other sports teams from Bay Village.

An online donation campaign, which initially is looking for 500 US dollars for the family, has collected more than $ 120,000 of more than 1,500 donors from Wednesday morning.

“We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and friendliness of our community and beyond,” said the family in an explanation. “We ask you to keep our thoughts and prayers in this difficult time.”

Between 1982 and 2020, 25 Lacrosse players between youth and college level died of injuries that were suffered in the field, as can be seen from a peer review from 2023 in the Annals of Medicine.

Even under these deaths – less than one year for a growing sport, which now has more than 400,000 players – is the type of injury that Veselic killed.

Four people examined in the study had either died of head or spine injuries. This is less than the number that has died of a sudden cardiac arrest, 12, and the number that has died of a disease called Commotio Cordis, seven.

Commotio Cordis is when a blunt object hits the left side of the breast during a critical moment during a heartbeat.
