Trump meets the day after the promise to raise sanctions

President Trump held an extraordinary meeting with the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Shara on Wednesday, after he announced that the United States would increase sanctions in his country-a step that would alleviate the economic territory for a nation that was considered central to the stability of the Middle East.

It was the first time in 25 years that the leaders of the two countries had met, and another milestone in Syria's offer to reintegrate themselves into the international community after decades of isolation. The two men spoke about half an hour just before a summit of the golf leader in Saudi Arabia, said an official of the White House.

Mr. Trump said Mr. Al-Shara that “he has an enormous opportunity to do something historical in his country,” said a summary of the meeting of the press spokesman in the White House, Karoline Leavitt. The President also asked Mr. Al-Shara to take steps to normalize the relationships of Syria to Israel, which have long been hostile and “leave all foreign terrorists,” the summary said.

Mr. Trump met Mr. Al-Shara at the invitation of the crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, who took part in the meeting.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from Turkey, who supported the uprising, who brought Mr. Al-Shara to power, joined by phone. Prince Mohammed and Mr. Erdogan had both asked Mr. Trump to raise the sanctions against Syria, and they praised the move of the meeting on Wednesday, whereby the Crown Prince described it as “brave” according to the summary of the White House.
