This Caribbean island received an updated travel consultant for petty crime and violence – what travelers should know

A new warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that the traveler to change caution when visiting Cuba due to crime and electrical failures. US travelers are only allowed to go to Cuba in certain situations, but those who travel should remain vigilant and prepare for events such as power failures.

While a visit to the Caribbean sunshine, beaches and a lot of fun can promise, travelers to Cuba have to exercise caution according to a new warning.

The US Ministry of State of the US Foreign Ministry for consular matters recently published level 2 for the island due to crime and unreliable electrical power. The consultation published on May 7 states that petty crime, violent crime, armed robbery and murder in Cuba are on the rise.

The warning message of level 2 encourages travelers to “change increased caution” and is below the maximum level 4 of “do not travel”.

In addition to the risk of crime and murder, the agency also mentions the potential of frequent electrical disorders.

“Since October 2024, there have been several long nationwide drops of power,” explains the advice. “Planned and unscheduled power outages of up to 12 hours occur daily in Havana and even longer outside the capital.”

The consultant also reminds the travelers that the citizens of the United States are prohibited from traveling to tourist or leisure activities or in Cuba. However, the government has an approval process for travelers for various reasons, including educational purposes, religious activities, sports competitions or for humanitarian reasons.

Travelers who still plan to visit Cuba should remain aware and avoid their surroundings to show signs of prosperity such as expensive watches or jewelry, according to the warning message, which also indicates that travelers should not physically resist. It is also a good idea to supply yourself through non -perishable food and water, make flashlights and batteries easily accessible and to keep mobile phones and electricity banks charged in the event of a power failure, advises the alert.
