Trump Administration to maintain some Pfas boundaries, but others remove

The environmental protection authority said on Wednesday that they would maintain drinking water standards for two harmful “Forever Chemicals”, which are available in the tap water of millions of Americans. But it said it would delay the deadlines to meet these standards and reset the boundaries for four other related chemicals.

Because of their practically indestructible nature, PFAS are known as chemicals and are a class of thousands of chemicals that are widespread in everyday products such as non-stick cookie harness, water-repellent clothing and stain-resistant carpets as well as in fire foams.

Exposure to PFAs or per- and polyfluoralkyl substances was associated with metabolic disorders, reduced fertility in women, developmental delays in children and an increased risk of some prostate, kidney and testicular cancer, according to the EPA

For the first time, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. had asked for water suppliers to reduce the values of six types of PFAS chemicals to almost zero. For two of these chemicals, Pfoa and Pfos, which most often occur in drinking water systems, he set a particularly strict limit of four parts per trillion.

The Trump government said that it would maintain the borders for these two types of Pfas, but delay a deadline for water supply companies to meet these limits by two years until 2031.

The EPA said it would be the boundaries for the other four chemicals.

“We are on the way to maintain the nationwide standards of the agency to protect Americans from Pfoa and Pfos in their water,” said Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator, in a statement. “At the same time, we will work to offer flexibility for common sense in the form of an additional time to comply with compliance,” he said. “The EPA will continue to use its regulatory and enforcement tools to fold out dirt.”
