The Swedish police arrested a 16-year-old who was suspected of shot and killed three people in the city of Uppsala on Tuesday.

The person is one of several who are interrogated because of the fatal attack, said the Swedish public prosecutor on Wednesday, said Reuters.

The officials carried out inquiries from door to door to get further information from witnesses. The police said the next of the victims' relatives had not yet been notified.

After the shootings near the Vaksala place of Uppsala, a large police operation was underway, reported the public service broadcasting radio SVT and added that the suspect was assumed that the suspect had fled the scene with an electric scooter.

Members of the public stated to hear loud pony, which resembled shots in the area. Several people were found with injuries that gravel the shots.

“We received several reports of pony in the area. That is what we can say at that time. I can no longer say,” said Magnus clarin, spokesman for the Swedish police, said according to SVT before the deaths were confirmed.

The motif behind the incident on Tuesday is still unclear. At the beginning of this year, the European Parliament said that Sweden “is currently fighting a wave of gang control”.

In 2023, according to Reuters, Sweden had the highest fatal gun violence per capita in the European Union. In 2024, at least 40 people in the country were shot by only 10 million people – from a highlight of 63 people who were shot in 2022.

Although Sweden has high gun ownership quotas according to EU standards, the Swedes have to receive a license before they can have a weapon, and the country places close restrictions on the authorization.

The shootout on Tuesday comes only a few months after a shooter has opened the fire in an adult education center in the Swedish city of Örebro, which the country's prime minister described as the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history”.

A total of 10 victims were killed in the attack, which took place in February, and another six people were injured.
