Will NBA BYU trainer Kevin Young call? New Cougar's ad Brian Santiago believes it.

The newly appointed sports director Brian Santiago wants to stay young in Provo in the long term.

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) Brian Santiago speaks during a press conference to announce his announcement as a new BYU sports director at Brigham Young University in Provo on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

Provo • What is Brian Santiago's first priority as BYU sports director?

Keep Kevin Jung.

Santiago, who was promoted to the top job this week, knows the urgency, to capture the head coach of the Cougars, which BYU converted into a potential final four team.

In the next few days, said Santiago on Wednesday, he would sit down with Young to convince him that it is the right step in the long term to stay in Provo – even if the NBA calls.

“We are very close and we will have a good conversation,” said Santiago. “I just think that everyone knows that there was a lot in which they are such a successful NBA trainer and the Phoenix Suns make the change with their head coach job. And it is obvious that they will be interested in talking to Kevin Young.”

Young came from Phoenix to Provo and Santiago last year believes that this summer he will be a candidate for an NBA job. The Suns fired Mike Bodenholzer in April and are still looking for a head coach.

Young was the best paid assistant in the NBA when he left Phoenix and could have been an NBA head coach last year. He is closely with several current Suns stars, including Devin Booker and Kevin Durant.

“I hope that Kevin Young is everything that happens here and for all these student athletes we have brought to BYU, sees that this is the right place for him and his family,” said Santiago. “So that we can develop with confidence and everyone knows that we are ready to go.”

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Byu basketball coach Kevin Young talks about the announcement of player Egor Demin, to enter the NBA draft, where he would be a choice in the first round in June in June during a message event in Provo on Tuesday, April 8th.

Young took by BYU for the first time in over a decade in his first campaign. He also gathered one of the better duties in College basketball, signed No. 1 -Prospect AJ Dybantsa and kept the potential NBA player Richie Saunders.

He came with the call to be one of the best offensive heads in the NBA, and his first team in the College ranks scored an average of 81 points per game. Under Young's instructions, Saunders bloomed to an all-Big-12 player and Point Guard Egor Demin was probably a choice in the first round.

Santiago was central to the hiring of Young to replace the former BYU head coach Mark Pope. Now Santiago will be decisive to stay young in Utah.

“The first thing I want to do is ensure that all our coaches are locked up on BYU and started with Kevin Young,” said Santiago.

And to ensure that he has been included in BYU for a long time. “
