Health advice in Madison published after natural gas leak

Madison, CT – Several residents of Madison have reported health symptoms such as headaches, since natural gas leaks were discovered in the Overbrook Road region at the weekend and the city's Ministry of Health issues health advice.

Causes regarding persistent gas smells and the safety of private fountain water were expressed, and the officials offer instructions for the residents.

“The short exposure of natural gas at low levels is generally not harmful,” said officials in a statement. “However, strong or persistent gas smells – especially indoors – should be taken seriously. Longer exposure can lead to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, tiredness or nausea.”

Residents who have experienced these symptoms should do that

  • Leave the area immediately
  • Call 911
  • Search for medical evaluation, especially if the symptoms remain

Officials said that “natural gas does not contaminate the groundwater”.

“However, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends private well owners to remain aware of changes in the taste, smell or appearance of the water – especially after the nearby environmental activities,” said civil servants. “When changes are observed, stop using the water for drinking or cooking, and let it test it professionally before using the use again.”
