Government acts as British retail crime escalates it

The retail crime in Great Britain has reached unprecedented level, since last year incidents of theft and violence increase against the employees of the shop.

In response to this, the government has introduced new laws that aim to contain the growing crisis.

According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) 2025 Crime Survey, the total costs for retail crime, including prevention measures, to 4.2 billion GBP in 2023/24, increased compared to 3.3 billion GBP in the previous year. Customer theft alone made up 2.2 billion GBP of these losses.

Over 20 million theft incidents were reported in the same period.

Violence and abuse compared to retail employees have dramatically performed with more than 2,000 incidents every day – an increase of over 50% compared to the previous year.

In particular, 70 of these daily incidents concerned a weapon, more than twice the number of the previous year.

In response to the escalating crisis of crisis, the British government introduced the 2025 crime and police law 2025.

One of the most important measures is to create an independent crime for the attacks of a retail employee, a maximum punishment of six months in prison and/or an unlimited fine.

When convicting, courts are expected to impose a criminal behavioral order, which may take off offenders from certain premises.

The legislation also lifts Section 22a of the Magistrate 'Courts Act 1980, which previously made it possible to treat the shoplifting of goods worth less than 200 GBP as a summary crime.

This change ensures that all shoplifting steels are treated with the seriousness that you earn, with potential prison terms of up to seven years.

Retail industry, including the BRC, welcomed the proposed legislation, but emphasize the need for effective implementation and enforcement.

They are committed to an increased presence of the police and better support for retail staff to combat the growing threat from retail crime.

Since retail crime continues to have an impact on companies and municipalities throughout the UK, the effectiveness of these legislative measures will be closely monitored in the coming months.
