Passenger in the Capmetro bus near the city center killed by Austin, suspicious in custody

After a violent attack on board a Capmetro bus near Wednesday evening, a man in the thirties is dead in the city center of Austin.

At around 6.46 p.m., the police officers from Austin responded to several 911 calls in which a male passenger was registered who suffered with blood and an obvious trauma in a bus in the 500 block of the South Lamar Boulevard, south of the crossing of the Barton Springs Road.

The Ems of the police and Austin-Travis County arrived quickly and started with life-saving measures, but despite their efforts, the victim was declared dead at 7:30 p.m.

According to the police, witnesses and support of the Capmetro Public Safety team initiated the officials to quickly identify and arrest a suspect in a nearby company at 7:12 p.m., less than 30 minutes after the first call.

The authorities say that this seems to be an isolated incident without continuing threat to the community.

“This is a very active crime scene,” said APD Pio David Lewis during a media information. “We ask the public to avoid the area and use alternative routes.”

The incident is examined as 25th murder of the year by Austin.

The victim who was passenger on the bus has not yet been publicly identified.

Around 6.45 p.m. on May 14, 2025, a violent incident occurred at one of our vehicles near the intersection of the Barton Springs Road and the South Lamar Boulevard. Tragically, the incident led to the death of a passenger. We are outraged and deeply sad about what took place. Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by this act of violence.

The security and well -being of our passengers and operators have our highest priority. There is absolutely no place for violence in our system. We are fully cooperating with our partners in the Austin police department, as they carry out a thorough examination to determine exactly what happened.

We understand that our community has questions and concerns about this tragedy and assures you that we are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure a secure transit system.

Capmetro CEO Dottie Watkins too divided their reaction in one post into Xformerly Twitter:

I am deeply destroyed and angry with the violent incident that took the life of a passenger on our bus this evening. “Watkins wrote about X.” This should never happen. Our passengers deserve to feel safe in our system, and I am personally obliged to ensure that this is the case. Violence of all kinds is never tolerated in our services, and we take immediate and necessary steps to protect our passengers.
