Trump says Delhi is ready to “no tariffs” US goods

US President Donald Trump has said that India offered to submit all goods from his country.

The Indian government “offered us a deal where you are basically willing to literally not raise a tariff,” said Trump at an event in Doha.

India and the United States are currently in discussions to negotiate a trade agreement.

Delhi has not yet commented on the comments. The BBC has contacted the Indian Ministry of Commerce for a comment.

No further details about the alleged deal have been published.

Trump spoke at an event with managing directors in Doha, in which he announced a number of shops between the USA and Qatar, including Boeing jets.

According to Bloomberg, the US President also said that he said Apple CEO Tim Cook that he should not expand production in India.

“I said I don't want to build in India,” said Bloomberg Trump to say about a conversation that he had led with MR Cook. He added that Apple would “increase its production in the United States”.

In a profit call at the beginning of this month, Apple announced that it would change the production of most iPhones from China to India, while Vietnam would be an important production center for articles such as iPads and Apple Watches.

President Trump hit tariffs of up to 27% of Indian goods in April. Delhi hurries to negotiate a trade agreement during the 90-day break from Trump about higher tariffs that ends on July 9th.

Until recently, the United States was the largest trading partner of India, with the bilateral trade 190 billion USD (143 billion GBP).

Delhi has already reduced tariffs on Bourbon Whiskey, Motorcycles and a few other US products, but the USA has a trade deficit of $ 45 billion with India that wants to reduce Trump.

“Since Trump always blamed the high tariffs of India for the trade deficit, India from Day 1 could offer 90% of US exports to make it, with a” zero-for-zero “approach, the tariff of all goods with the exception of cars and agriculture. However, the deal has to ensure strict reciprocity, where are, “it says to a even tariff.

Trump and Modi have set a goal of more than doppel trade to USD 500 billion, but Delhi is unlikely that Delhi offers concessions in sectors such as agriculture in which deeper political sensitives are involved.

India recently showed more openness to trade agreements after years of skepticism.

Last week it deteriorates a trading pact with Great Britain, which will significantly collect the tasks in many protected sectors such as whiskey and automobiles.

Last year India signed a free trade agreement of $ 100 billion with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – a group of four European countries that are not members of the European Union – negotiations after almost 16 years.

The EU and India are also urged to hold a free trade agreement this year.
