A new AP-NORC survey is determined

By Maya Sweedler Associated Press

Washington (AP) – When Meghan sold heads to the Providence Park to observe Oregon's professional women's football team, she is under a fairly mixed amount of groups of young women, fathers who bring their children, youth players who check the latest game of the Thorns.

The doctor's assistant is a self -described lifelong sports fan and former softball player who will “watch every sport”. This includes both college

According to a new survey by the Associated Press-Norc Center for Public Affairs Research, around 3 out of 10 US growths follow the professional or college sports of women “extreme”, “very” or “something”. This is lower than the proportion that follows the sports through the same measurements – about half – but it also shows that sold is anything but alone.

Since interest and investments in women's sports have increased in recent years, this also has the entry points for fans. The meteoric rise of Caitlin Clark, the phenomenon WNBA star of the University of Iowa, contributed to drawing extensive attention to women's basketball, and the availability of streaming, international success and names, image and similarity transactions increased the value and viewership of women's sports.

“When I grew up, I have the feeling that the only sports I could really see on TV were men – which is okay, I like men's sports,” said Sells. “But I enjoy seeing more women's sports … … I think the more you see it on TV, the more you will have younger people who are interested.”

The survey showed that women's sports fans – those who at least follow “somewhat” women's sports – differ from men's sports fans. Fans of women's sports are not a majority-female group, although they are not more gender-specific than men's sports fans. Those who follow the women -Pro -Pro -Sport are also more casual in their fandom than men -Pro sports fans and tend to say that they are occasionally present or see. In contrast, people who pursue sports identify bonds on teams than the players.

The survey was carried out shortly before the start of the 2025 WNBA season, an expansion year for the league. In a season in which the visitor records were set (and reset) (reset), the league will debut a new franchise – the Golden State Valkyries – and the number of regular season games from 40 to 44.

In 2026, two additional teams will join the league, including one in Portland, Oregon. Sells, who has been in the city for about a decade, said she was ready to get season tickets.

Different fan base

Men sports on both the collegiate and on the professional level are still more popular than women's sports, according to the survey. About a third of the adults told us that they were looking, listening, hearing or reading about men's sports sports at least “something”, and more than 4 out of 10 said they followed the pro-sports of men. In contrast, around 2 out of 10 say that they follow the women's college sports at least “something”, and a similar proportion means that they follow women's professionals.

A larger proportion of men than women say that they follow professional or college sports as a whole, but the gender balance was more likely to be women sports fans. About half of the fans of women's sports are male, as the survey showed compared to two thirds of fans of men's sports.

This could be partly due to the overlap between the fandoms: about 90% of US -growing people who at least follow the women's sports, also say exactly the same about men's sports, although about half of the people who follow men's sports, including the sports of women.

With increasing popularity and accessibility of women, a relatively large proportion of occasional fans. While almost 9 out of 10 of men's and women's professional sports fans say that they often or occasionally watch, hear or read about their respective professional sport, say a higher percentage of women's sports fans that they are only occasional consumers.

These include people like Matthew Behr, 58, a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers in his home state of Wisconsin. He doesn't look at much basketball, he said, but when the sport crosses the reporting on reporting, he will read it.

So he began to follow Clark, whose last season was attributed in Iowa to have brought new spectators to sport and who is now playing for Indiana fever.

“I saw it on MSNBC,” he said. “I don't see much basketball. It is not a male and women down. If she plays in a women's football league, I would probably see that.”

Visit games

Male sports – with larger leagues, larger television information and a more expansive media ecosystem – have a fervent audience. About two thirds of the sports fans of men said they visited “frequently” or “occasionally” personally at a professional athlete, compared to about half of the sports fans for women.

One possible reason why women's sports fans do not appear at sporting events is that they are less likely to be bound to a certain team. Only about a third of sports fans for women said that the teams who support or follow them are “extreme” or “very” important why they follow sport. For men's fans, the number was around 50%.

However, almost identical shares in men's and women's sports fans said that certain athletes who support them were at least “very” important why they follow women's sports.

Bernard Seltzer, a high school administrator and mathematics and natural sciences teacher in Tampa, Florida, sees himself as a general sports fan and said that he likes to watch the skillful athletes, regardless of their gender. Even at the high school level, he is impressed by the finesse that he shows female athletes.

“Sometimes it is more impressive to watch male people who hit their heads against the wall,” he said.

The AP-NORC survey of 1,260 adults was carried out from April 17 to 21 using a sample from the probability base of NORC, which is designed as representative of the US population. The sales edge for adults in total is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
