Cyclists family who were killed in the Coweta County Crash demands a greater driver's awareness

The family of a 69-year-old cyclist who was killed in an accident on a rural street Coweta County speaks and asks the drivers to make themselves more careful and respectful to cyclists.

The background story:

Carl Wiggers, a well-known Newnan businessman and enthusiastic cyclist, was fatally driven by a truck on the Old Highway 85 near Eastside Elementary School on April 5. The driver identified as a 62-year-old Martyce Farmer is charged, including vehicle murder to the second degree.

What you say:

“Oh, I don't understand how you couldn't have seen him,” said Marcia Wiggers, Carl's wife. “He was outdoors, he all had red, he was really big and used his bicycle lights.”

Lawyer Bruce Hagen, who represents the Wiggers family, emphasized the importance of driver awareness. “Carl Wiggers did nothing wrong here and was run down by a driver – intentionally or not – who was simply not safe at the wheel and a tragedy occurred,” he said.

Hagen also asked the public to remember that cyclists are more than just drivers. “These are people and members of the community,” he said.

Wiggers was an integral part of South Metro Atlanta's cycling community and had U Dirty Dog, a self-washed and pet care business, for more than two decades.

What's next:

For the coming Wednesday in Peachtree City, a memorial ride is planned to honor cyclists who were killed on the street last year. The participants are asked to wear red – Wiggers favorite color – in his memory.

The family hopes that Carl Wiggers' death will be reminded of what is at stake when the drivers do not share the street.
