Trump says that talks about the Iran nuclear program are “very serious”

President Trump said on Thursday that his government approached an atomic agreement with Iran, one of the most important goals of his second term.

“We have very serious negotiations with Iran about long-term peace,” said Trump on the third day of a four-nation tour through the Middle East at a round table in Doha, Qatar. “And if we do that, it will be fantastic.”

“Iran agreed to the conditions, so to speak,” he said, according to a Pool report by the White House. “We may approach a deal.”

Just like this deal and its terms look, it would be unclear. Both sides are far from a consensus on important topics. A big sticking point is whether Iran can enrich after a new deal in a lower grade for civil application or would have to completely dismantle its program, as the Trump government sometimes demanded.

Mr. Trump said he wanted Iran to be a big country, but “you can't have a nuclear weapon.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday when signing a book in Tehran for his new book “Negotiation” that Iran would never give up its right to civil nuclear power, and added that “none of our nuclear enrichment facilities would be dismantled”.

Mr. Araghchi and Steve Witkoff, the president's special representative, held four rounds of negotiations mediated by Oman, who described both sides as constructive.
