How Ed Sheeran's copyright lawsuit inspired a new song: Singer remembers moments with Taylor Swift, One Direction and more

Ed Sheeran has announced that his upcoming single Old Phone was inspired by his experience in the copyright lawsuit. The singer went on Instagram to share a number of Throwback photos and to announce the start of a new Instagram account before the song was published on Thursday, April 29. The account contains invisible images, Lyric notes and news from the past, which has set up a closer look at his emotional journey to fans.

Sheeran announced that he found inspiration for the song when he went through his old phone, which was handed over to lawyers during his copyright. “When I was sued, the judge ordered me to give up my old devices,” he wrote. “I switched on my old phone.”

The lawsuit was associated with his HIT 2014, which was presented loudly, which was accused of copying Marvin Gayes Let's Get it ot coped. In 2023, Ed Sheeran was clarified in court. However, the review of his old phone during the legal process brought back unexpected emotions.

“The first news came from my friend Jamal Edwards, who had recently died,” he wrote. “The second was from my ex-girlfriend. The third was a family member with whom I haven't spoken for a decade.”

Sheeran admitted that scrolling through the news opened a time capsule from 2015. He added that he cried to friends who are no longer with him. He said, “It felt like a time of life I lived at the time.”

Together with the Song announcement, ED shared photos with friends such as Taylor Swift, One Direction and the late Jamal Edwards. He thought that the memories brought back feelings about people to whom he had once been close, since then had lost contact with the contacts or who had died. He mentioned that it found old photos from this time and felt emotional in the past connections.

The old phone was written at 2 a.m. during a late -evening meeting in India when he ended the work on his new album. He said the song felt like it had belonged to his debut album, but added that it was something that he could only write when he had made life experiences.

The new single is part of the upcoming eighth studio album by Ed Sheeran, which is expected to be released in 2025. He shared plans to publish a new song every month that leads to the start of the album. The first track, Azizam, was released on April 4th.

In order to advertise the music, Sheeran surprised the fans in London with a live performance in front of the cross station of King, a pink t-shirt wore and, according to the Daily Mail, appeared against a large backdrop for pink heart. He also toured the city with a pink double -decker bus and played popular songs like Shape of You and Perfect.
