Watch: 4-year-old fire brigade rings bell after final cancer treatment

It was a big day for a young Cherokee County Boy.

After Austin Herre had spent most of his life with cancer treatment, he rang the cancer bell and symbolized the end of his treatment.

What you say:

It is the day when Chelsea Herres Herres Austin has been pleased since January 2023 when he was diagnosed with leukemia. The day he sounds the cancer bell at Children's Healthcare from Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital.

“He fought more than half of his life against leukemia,” said Chelsea.

“It was a long journey to come here and many difficult times, but a very exciting day,” said Chad Herre, Austin's father.

Hard is an understatement. But the Lords are grateful for all people who were at their side during this trip, as well as for the experiences that some dark days made a little brighter.

Local perspective:

Like in the time when Sandy Springs shaken off the hospital from the roof and waving the young patient through the window on the way downwards.

Austin had to see it from the roof. It was something very special for him. He wants to become a firefighter and has a special connection to the members of the fire brigade of Cherokee County.

“You will bring the Fire Trucks past, if he has a bad day,” said Chad.

Austin is an honorary firefighter in the department.

“I am a leukemia myself -and it touched me in a special way to see how our boys interact with him,” said chief Eddie Robinson.

The firefighters were there when Austin received an 850 square meter tree house from make-a-ribbon Georgia. It was set up and decorated with all the things that Austin loves, from dinosaurs to fire stations.

“You really paid attention to what Austin likes; you really did it for him,” said Chad.

What's next:

Now that Austin will spend less time for the doctor's appointments, there will be more time for him to follow his dreams.

“At some point I really believe in my heart that Austin will be a firefighter of Cherokee County,” said Chief Robinson.
