The impairment contributed to a fiery fatal crash on the I-77 in Iredell County, say soldiers, say soldiers

Troutman, NC (WBTV) – The impairment was a contribution to a fiery fatal crash on the I -77 early Friday morning, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

The crash, in which a Chevrolet Silverado and a tractor-trailer took place at 2 a.m. on the I-77 North near the exit 42 to Charlotte Highway.

The Highway Patrol said that the crash had happened when a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado drove to the south on the side north and collided head -on with a tractor. The tractor -trailer then stormed and caught fire.

Soldiers said the driver of Silverado, 31-year-old Eric Anthony Pompa, had worn a seat belt, but still ejected. He died at the scene. The driver of the semitrailer was brought to a Winston-Salem hospital and is expected to survive.

The video of the scene showed what the Silverado seems to have completely destroyed, whereby the trailer had come to rest on his left side. The truck that dragged the trailer was charred from the fire and raised by a wrecker. The truck and the trailer seemed to have separated during the collision.

The crash closed the i-77 for several hours on Friday morning, whereby the last estimate states that the interstate can be reopened shortly after 11 a.m.

State soldiers said that no charges were submitted in this case.
