On Friday, the Tony-nominated songwriters Julia Mattisone and Noel Carey closed CBS Mornings to discuss their songs for the HIT Broadway musical death. Based on the film of the same name, the show received 10 Tony nominations, including the best original score.

“To be honest, it is character first,” said Carey when he asked the ancient question whether the music or texts are the top priority in the writing process. “We both met as an actor … And we like to get into the characters and play them out and play and improvise and see where we lead.”

“We are on the move most of the time,” added mattisone. “We speak an idea for death before we start to musize them because we really want to make sure the actor gives a lot to play and the story progresses with our music. We want to know how this character is different at the end of the song than they were when they jump in.” Now look at the complete interview with the songwriters.

With 10 Tony Award nominations, death is now playing in the Lunt Fontante until Sunday, April 5, 2026. It is the most frequently nominated show of the year, which also receive 12 nominations for the circle award, 5 nominations for drama desk award, nominations for drama LEAGE AWARD and 2 Chita Rivera Award nominations.
