The New York Yankees with their Baseman are back to the drawing board after the recent injury to Oswaldo Cabrera.

Cabrera suffered an ankle injury on Monday, and the infield was quickly operated on to repair it. However, the Yankees have a large gap in the hot corner with very low options to improve the team internally.

An option from outside is Ke'bryan Hayes from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hayes was not the best striker in the course of his career up to this point, but this season he beats with a Homerun and 14 RBI .260. His 78 OPS+ is under the league average, but it is one of the best in the league in the third basis.

Every manager or a front office manager will tell you that saving a run is as valuable as it is to be assessed. Hayes may not deliver the most offensive, but he will be a gold glove finalist nine out of 10 seasons nine times.

Hayes is obviously very familiar with the Yankees because of his father Charlie Hayes and spends part of his career in the Bronx. The Yankees certainly have him on their radar, as a commentary Michael Kay was mentioned in his podcast in January.

“Ke'bryan Hayes is a defender on the third basis,” said Kay. “His goal is not what it should be, but he is obviously not happy in Pittsburgh. I spoke to Charlie when the Yankees were in Pittsburgh a few years ago, and he was like his head when he scratched some of the things they do in Pittsburgh.

In view of the pirates, lack of success and no imminent plans to turn things around, trade with Hayes for Pittsburgh makes a lot of sense. The Yankees would also benefit by average 8.75 million US dollars a year until the 2029 season with a club option for 2030 at a very affordable price.
