Transcript

Christopher Lee, DVM, MPH, DACVPM: This is a Vetwatch update at DVM360. I am Christopher Lee.

Cochliomyia HarmivoraxThe new world screw -up worms. I am asked if there is a realistic potential that this fly will hit the United States next year or so. Let's take a look at the math to answer this question. In addition, we can take a look at the mathematics on white frailing deer to explain the general devastation that can convey this fly.

If we look at the white deer population in the 1940s and 50s and it was compared after the 1970s-after the new world worm was eradicated-we see an almost 10-fold difference in the increase in the population. Now the extermination of screw worm was not the only factor that helped the de -decline, but an important factor in this change.

How did we eradicate now? Cochliomyia Harmivorax From the USA back in the 1960s? Well to understand that, Cochliomyia HarmivoraxThe new globe worms, has an Achilles' heel – or Achilles Tarsus, so to speak. And that is that the woman only has sex once. If she irradiated sterile men into the environment if they have sex with the female, this female can no longer be able to produce viable eggs. And so it was done.

How many irradiated flies do you need to do this? In the 1960s we had three laboratories that produced 800 million flies a week – and that was from the combined efforts of a laboratory in Panama, Mission, Texas and Chiapa de Corzo (near Tuxtla GutiĆ©rrez, Chiapas, Mexico). As a result, we had 800 million. Well, what is being done now? The only one who is currently still working is in Panama Copeg. You have a maximum capacity and publish up to 100 million dolls per week in the environment through floor boxes and air publications.

And although we really appreciate these efforts, this does not stop the movement. In every single country in Central America we moved from South America from the New World Screwworm and got to Mexico. We are currently looking at the numbers that almost doubled every few weeks. A few sightings of New World Screwworm in Mexico to dozens of over 400 different sightings of this fly in Mexico have run. Very scary. There are only two Mexican states that separated the confirmed new world screw worm case from the US border.

What does that mean? Well, it means that the invasion is likely. We will probably see the screweworm of the new world this year, if not next. It also means that there is the potential to create devastation – for our protein production, for our pets, for ourselves and for animal world. So we have to stay vigilant. If there are concerns that you see this fly, there are many laboratories with which maggots or adults can be identified.

Since our last new World Screwworm video, cases in Mexico have risen over 1,400 a.m. In the meantime, there is only one Mexican state that separates the new world screw worm case from the Texas border. For this reason, the United States has stopped all cattle imports from Mexico over the weekend – a step that could have a year between 1.2 and 1.8 million cattle. This is a great success in our beef chain. And this is not just a threat from the animal illness, but actively knocks on our door.

So stay vigilant, you know how to recognize it and do not hesitate to report potential cases. Thank you for only setting up at DVM360 at Vet Watch, where you all protect everyone today.
