Trump claims that 5,000 Russian Ukrainian soldiers were killed every week. Here is what the numbers say

After the deadliest attack on Kyiv since last summer, US President Donald Trump seemed to lose patience with Russia and post on social media: “Vladimir, stop! 5,000 soldiers die per week. Let us do the peace agreement!”

Trump repeated a number that he quoted in the past to arrange for a quick solution to the war in Ukraine without supporting evidence of his statement.

Although its number is far higher than public estimates, a lack of official data in order to counteract his claims, largely led to limited setbacks.

Both Ukraine and Russia closely guard their figures as state secrets and make an information to be null and void to fill others.

The real number of deaths is a question of the intensive debate, but experts have used open sources and intelligence estimates to try to calculate how many Ukrainian and Russian troops died throughout the war.

We know the following.

The majority of troop deaths have been on the Russian side

The exact numbers vary, but all experts agree – Russia loses far more troops than Ukraine.

With open sources, BBC Russia and Mediazona, a Russian independent media company, have collected names of more than 100,000 Russian soldiers who have been killed in February 2022 since the start of the full invasion.

When adapting to soldiers, whose names in cemeteries, death ads and war monuments do not appear public, BBC Russia said that the true fatalities between 158,885 and 229,500 Russian soldiers could be enough between 158,885 and 229,500.

The general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces publish daily estimates of the loss of troops in Russia, but do not separate the deaths of people who are wounded. The combined victims a total of 951,960 on April 30th. The general staff members have not published any details on the calculation of these estimates.

In January, the then US defense minister said that Russia suffered more than 700,000 victims and combined both deaths and injuries.

Although the Ukraine avoided most of the war and reported to hold back from their allies, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on February 16 that more than 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died on the Battlefield since February 2022.

However, unofficial estimates set the number higher. There are no tens of thousands of soldiers who are not included in the count. In addition, confidential sources of Wall Street Journal cited deaths of 80,000 and 70,000 in August 2023 in August 2023. Kyiv pushed back these estimates.

The Kyiv Independent was unable to check the numbers provided by various sources.

Despite the losses, Russia still has a much larger military and a much larger population, which are about recruitment efforts. For this reason, it managed to continue to grind on the battlefield and at the same time maintain high losses.

Losses fluctuate, but the average death toll is far lower than Trump cites

In more than three years of war, the average number of weekly soldiers – even if it looks at the higher end of public estimates for both Russia and Ukraine, is far below what Trump quotes, with less than 2,000 per week on what Trump quotes.

The losses have increased compared to the beginning of the complete invasion, and daily and weekly toll fees fluctuate depending on the battlefield conditions. The losses rose again during the costly battle of Bakhmut at the end of 2022 and early 2023 and in late 2024 when they increased the fight.

Several source of the commander-in-chief of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, that around half of Russian troop losses took place in 2024 when Russia strengthened its infantry attacks.

According to Syrskyi, around 7,000 Russian troops were died in January alone, and another 8,000 were injured near Pokrovsk. The fight there has concentrated near the decisive logistics center in the Ukrainian Eastern Front.

Even if he has been taking higher losses lately, the average toll fee for Ukraine and Russia is behind Trump's comments every week.

“A very bloody war” – what is the number of fatalities of Russia in Ukraine?

After USAM February 12th had a call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, on February 12, she claimed that “millions” of life in Ukraine were lost due to the “very bloody war”. It was not the first time that Trump claimed that such a number of people was
