Here are some highlights from the first day of the North 1 Group 1 and 4 State Sectional Championships on all Jacobsen Memorial Field of the Livingston High School:

Upper defends an 800 meter title, Pash adds his four section titles with 800 personal best

Both Ryan Ober and Luke Pash entered the first day as a top seed in their respective 800 meter races. But both confronted a steep competition.

Portman and Emmanuel Marin von Kinnelon stayed through the two rounds on the top of the cock, while Pash Hackensacks had seven Garcia, who ended the winter season with All American, All State, All County and All League for companies.

However, both seniors have found a way to assert themselves.

Ober, who won the title 2024 800 meters, had a slight lead against Portman and Marin in the first round. But there was still work. A 56.17-400-meter split in the second round kept the lead to the goal and took over the first North 1 reimbursement of group 1 in 14 years.

“In the beginning I felt like I was just sitting behind me,” said Ober. “So I didn't want to push the pace. I went a bit and when I got to this 500, I knew I had to go. I started booking it [and] I hoped nobody made me to do it and nobody did it. ”

Pash and Garcia had a classic duel in the Ridgewood-Hacksack dual meeting on April 29, where Pash was running 1: 52.4-1: 53.6. Garcia took the lead again in this race after Pash was blocked at the beginning. North Carolina's commit quickly received an indictment to the front.

“I think the boys in the front slowed it down immediately when we got out a little hard in the first round,” said Pash.

After the early Lead exchange, Pashs gap grew immensely when he ran most of the race alone and ended in 1: 51.50 – almost three seconds faster than Garcia, the ninth fastest race in the history of Bergen County and only 0.61 seconds before the section record. Pash later won the 3200 meters for the third time in a row.

“That would have been great,” said Pash about the section record. “I got the victory. I definitely pushed towards the end. I could probably have left a little bit, but I wanted to drive a quick time and trust a little further into the championship season.”

The boy's 800 meter title was one of nine races that Hasbrouck Heights and Ridgewood brought into the top on the first day.

Formoso repeats itself as a girls' Group 4 Pole Vault Champion and is looking for more

Isabella Formoso has dominated in the section 4 of Group 4 sections for three years. The Bergen Tech Senior occupied in 2023 with a height of 10-6. The following year she repeated the feat with a height of 11-6. This year she solved the first triple winner of the event for the first time since 2010.

“The best thing is that, although I have won it in the past, it is never the same competition every year. I have observed everyone with which I competed with myself.” She said.

The Carnegie Mellon commit entered the top seeds, but knew that they would feel pressure from Alicia Brown and Emai Hanada from West Orange.

While Brown and Hanada both ended with 10-6 under their seeds, Formoso did not do. The senior achieved a height of 11: 6 for the third meeting in a row this season. Their height of 11-6 is in the top 10 in New Jersey and was one of eight seniors who were repeated on the first day as section lists.

“12 would be nice, over 12 would be more beautiful. But if my best is now 11-6, I will just kill it and win there. So whatever I need to win and be the best I can be,” said Formoso.
