The Celtics did not take care of the costs of maintaining their championship core after triumph of 2024 last season. They hoped to break a long drought from NBA champions that do not defend their title. The last team that did this successfully was the 2018 Golden State Warriors 2018, who pursued her triumph in 2017 with another title.

Since 2018 we have seen how different champions take over the crown every season. The Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Warriors, Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics won championships, but everyone did not defend their title. That is seven years in a row, which corresponds to a similar drought that the league saw from 2003 to 2009.

The Warriors 2019, who lost to the Raptors in the final, were the last champions who returned to the final. You could not match the Celtics this year.

The longest of similar drought in the NBA was from 2003 to 2009, the years between Kobe Bryants third and fourth title, with his fifth and the first successful defense since the Lakers three-speed winner in 2002.

In the league, all masters defended their title at least once from 1987 to 2002, with the exception of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs. This is a new era of parity that is even greater than that of the majority of the 2000s.
