The American basketball player could be exposed to a death penalty after the arrest of drugs

A former NBA hope and professional basketball player learned that he could face the death penalty in Indonesia in Indonesia after being arrested last week due to alleged drug requirements

The American basketball player Jarred Shaw was arrested after he was supposed to try to bring illegal drugs to Indonesia where he plays professionally.

The 34-year-old basketball star faces a potential lifelong prison sentence, whereby the death penalty is said not to be outside the table, since convicted smugglers were executed for similar cases. Shaw has played in Indonesia in the past three years and also had stints in Europe and South America.

Shaw's apartment was attacked outside the capital Jakarta, where over 130 pieces “cannabis cany” were found, generally known as “rubber”.

The chief of police at Sokarno-Hatta Airport, Ronald Sipayung, had stated that a tip had come to Collar airport that Shaw received a “suspicious airway package from Thailand” where it is legal. It remains illegal in Indonesia. Shaw admitted that he wanted to give his teammates the objects.

The chairman of the Indonesian basketball league Budisatrio Djiwandono said: “We do not tolerate players, administrators or people in the field in which drugs are involved. There is no room for drug users in the basketball world.”

Tikky Suwantikno, the manager of his former team, said reporters on Thursday that the Shaw's team was disappointed and explained that he was released. Interestingly, the team's official Instagram account published a picture by Shaw with the words “Thank you” and gave the player a shipping party.

While criminals were executed in the past in Indonesia, the last instance was almost 10 years ago, as early as July 2016, when three foreign people were killed.

Shaw was an NBA view before playing worldwide and was hoping for both the state of Oklahoma and for the US state of Utah in the league while he was in the draft from 2014.

After Shaw was awkward, he moved to Turkey to play in Ankara before he returned to the USA while playing for the G-League team of the Golden State Warriors in Santa Cruz Warriors.

Shaw then started traveling professionally around the world, moved to Argentina, Japan, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia before he ended up in Thailand and then moved to Indonesia in 2022.
