Indianapolis (Wish) – In her recent day at the weekend, Dr. Henderson, a clinical psychologist at Indiana University, on the importance of validation – an important communication skills that helps people feel, heard and understood.

The segment, like the validation that therapists often taught, examined a powerful tool for everyone who wants to strengthen personal or professional relationships. Instead of offering solutions or praise, the validation is about recognizing the emotional experience of a person other as real and understandable.

“Validation is not about agreeing to someone or fixing their problems,” said Henderson. “It is about let them know that their experience makes sense and that they are not alone.”

She led her through the validation manager, a simple three -stage approach:

  1. Be careful – Take your full attention. Keep eye contact, nod and remove distractions to show that you are present.
  2. Show understanding – Recognize that your feelings are valid and make sense in the context of your experience.
  3. Demonstrate empathy – react with emotional support. This could be, the helper, the share of a similar experience or expressing their own feelings.

Henderson said that investigations show that validation can lead to stronger compounds, reduced conflict, improved communication and even greater self -compassion.

“Most of us just want to hear,” said Dr. Henderson. “Practice the validation is one of the most effective ways to establish this connection and trust.”
