Trump asks Walmart to eat the tariffs after the retailer says that prices could rise

President Trump Schlaht Walmart On Saturday after the retail giant warned that his tariffs would force them to increase prices and to write on social media that the discount chain could afford to accept the costs of the new import taxes without passing them on to customers.

“Walmart should stop trying to accuse the tariffs as the reason for increasing prices in the entire chain,” wrote Mr. Trump about the social social media website of truth. “Walmart earned billions of dollars last year, much more than expected.”

He asked Walmart, the country's largest retailer, to “eat the tariffs” and to keep prices low. “I'll watch and her customers too,” he wrote.

Mr. Trump's attempt to harass Walmart to keep his prices stable came when the president, who campaigned for a promise to prevent inflation, works to prevent his turbulent trading policy from increasing prices.

Walmart, which sells a wide selection of affordable goods to millions of Americans, said on Thursday that Mr. Trump's tariffs, even at its recently reduced level, would soon force prices to increase.

“We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible,” said the managing director of Walmart, Doug McMillon, when calling with analysts. However, he warned that the company would not be able to “absorb” the pressure raised by the tariffs.
