After an explosion near a reproductive health facility in Palm Springs, California, at least one person was killed, said the city's mayor.

The chief of police from Palm Springs, Andy Mills, said the explosion on Friday “seems to be a deliberate act of violence”, and some buildings are badly damaged.

“There was a death, the person's identity is not known,” said Mills' explanation.

The city's mayor, Ron Deharte, said a bomb was either in or near a car that was parked outside the clinic when it exploded, reported Reuters news agency.

The fire chief of Palm Springs, Paul Alvarado, said that no suspect was identified.

The authorities said that the explosion took place on Saturday around 11 a.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT) near the North Indian Canyon Drive and the East Tachevah Drive. The police asked the residents to avoid the area when the firefighters and investigators secured the scene.

Federal agents of the FBI and the office for alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives were sent to support the local studies that exist in the early phases.

The explosion damaged the establishment of the American reproductive centers, one of Dr. Maher abdallah operated fertility clinic. He informed the Associated Press that the laboratory of the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and its stored embryos, while his office space had suffered damage, were unaffected.

“I really have no idea what happened,” said Abdallah. “Thank God today was a day when we have no patients.”

Nima Tabriz, 37, from Santa Monica, said he was in a cannabis pharmacy when he shook the building.

“The building just trembled and we go outside and there is a massive cloud smoke,” said Tabrizi. “Crazy explosion. It felt like a bomb started … we went to the scene and we saw human remains.”

Palm Springs, a wealthy desert city, which is known for its luxury resorts and its celebrity history, is about 161 km east of Los Angeles.
