Dui suspects the crash of Kurtistown, in which pedestrians were killed

The Hawaii County police arrested a 30-year-old man on Friday evening because of the suspicion of driving a first-degree and negligent murder of the first degree after the vehicle in which he drove a 21-year-old pedestrian in Kurtistown.

The police identified the pedestrian as Maxwell Robertson Sherwood from Keaau.

The driver of a Jeep Wrangler from 2010 drove east at the Orchidland Drive near the 36th Avenue 36th when the vehicle was Sherwood on the street and not on a marked zebra crossing, the police said in a press release.

The police said a witness reported that other vehicles had blown away from the impact in order not to meet the pedestrian who was in the middle of the street.

Sherwood was brought to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center with the ambulance, where he died of his injuries. It was declared dead at 7:48 p.m. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The driver was not injured. It remains in custody at the Hilo police station until further investigations are exposed to.

“At this point, the police believed that alcohol is a factor for the crash,” said the Hawaii County police in a press release.

This is the 13th transport traffic of Hawaii Island from 2025 compared to 16 at the same time last year.
