The Mexican shipping ship crashes against the Brooklyn Bridge – DW – 18.05.2025

A Mexican naval training, Cuauhtemoc sailing ships Cuauhtemoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday during an advertising tour in New York City.

The top of the three masts of the ship popped into the iconic span and partially collapsed when the boat hovered in the East River.

According to a statement by the Mexican Navy, at least 22 people were critically injured in the accident.

“No staff fell into the water, so it was not necessary to activate rescue operations,” added the explanation.

In the meantime, the Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, said that 19 people were injured in the crash, four of them seriously, but the 142-year bridge was spared serious damage. The cause of the collision is examined.

What else do we know about the crash?

Several eyewitness videos captured the masts that snapped and partially collapsed when they plunged against the deck of the bridge. Videos showed heavy traffic on the bridge at the time of the collision.

The ship then drifted to the edge of the river when the spectators fell away from the shore. Sailors could be seen in the rigging on the damaged masts in the air.

The New York Post reported that the victims were brought to the local hospitals.

According to several US media reports, around 200 people were on board the Cuauhtemoc, a BARK that was built in 1982 with a mast height of 48.2 meters.

The Cuauhtemoc had a training maneuver at that time and, according to a separate explanation of the Mexican Navy, was damaged on X in the “mishap”.
