Brooklyn Bridge Ship Crash kills two people: NYC Mayor | National

Two people died and 19 others were injured after a Mexican training ship of the Navy met the Brooklyn Bridge, said the Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams on Sunday.

The ship snapped all three masts when it was late Saturday with the landmark of New York City, while spectators saw the mild spring evening horrified.

The Mexican Navy said in a statement that 22 people on board the ship were injured in the crash, three of them critically.

There was “panic on the ship”, Nick Corso, 23, who lived in Brooklyn, who was near the water, told AFP.

“Many screams, some seafarers hanging on the masts, looked like panic on the ship,” he said.

“I didn't see anyone falling into the water, but a lot of people above. People ran back and shouted!” Corso, which makes marketing for the entertainment company Veefrends.

“The only thing that struck me was the panic on the ship, and on the back a man waved that people move away from the sidewalk we were on,” he said.

In her explanation, the Mexican Navy said that nobody fell into the water and that no rescue operation had started.

Seconds after the ship had left the dock, “we suddenly saw all lights as they collided, hit the bridge, and they (the seafarers) fell down.

“While the inspections continue to continue, there are no signs of structural damage to Brooklyn Bridge,” the New York traffic department put on X.

The bridge, which leads from Brookly to Manhattan, was closed for 40 minutes before it was reopened.

Victims were taken to the hospital, said Mexican ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragan of a press conference, and siren were heard near the scene.

Aramboles of the New York police authority said that the Cuauhtemoc, a bark built in 1982, which had a mast height of 48.2 meters (158 feet), sailed to Iceland.

According to a contribution on the Facebook page of the Mexican embassy, ​​it had only arrived in New York four days earlier.

The Cuauhtemoc was damaged in the “misfortune”, confirmed the Mexican Navy in an explanation of X.

The ship was later laid near the Manhattan Bridge, an AFP journalist.
