Iran sentenced three people to death and, in connection with two fatal, Islamic state shootings, handed over several other prison terms in a large Shiraz, the judiciary announced on Sunday.

The judgments follow the attacks in October 2022 and August 2023 to the Shah Cheragh Mausoleum, a revered religious site in the capital of the province of Fars. The shootings killed 15 people and later claimed by the Islamic state group.

According to the highest judge of the province of Fars, Sadrollah Rajaei-Stasab, the three people were sentenced to “corruption on earth” for support and employment, an indictment that bears the death penalty in Iran. The Revolutionary Court in Shiraz also sentenced her to 25 years in prison because she had supported “Moharebeh” or hostility against God, another serious capital crime in accordance with the Islamic Criminal Code of Iranian Criminal Condition.

Two other persons described as Islamic citizens were sentenced to 15 years and 10 years in prison, since the authorities, according to the authorities, were their participation and cooperation in the carpentry attacks.

The judiciary also condemned two women of five years each. However, their punishment is carried out under the provisions “Islamic Conspiration”. They are monitored with electronic ankle bracelets and locked up in a one-kilometer radius of their houses, said Rajaei-Stasab.

The judgments are part of a more comprehensive case, the arms trade and other charges that are still under judicial review. Some of the decisions were filed to the Supreme Court of Iran.

In July 2023, Iran publicly executed two men who were convicted of Shah Cheragh's first attack. According to the authorities, the second attack in August 2023 led to the arrest of nine suspects, all of which were identified as foreign nationals. A Tajik member of the state, also connected to the Islamic state, was sentenced to death in September.

The Shah Cheragh shrine, one of the most sacred locations for Shiite Muslims in Southern Iran, has become the goal of militant in recent years and underlines the security challenges of the country in the middle of wider regional unrest.
