The 13-year-old, who was killed in sleep after he was hit by a stray ball, fired two apartments over it

A 13-year-old boy in Oregon was killed when a stray ball drove two apartments over several walls and hit him when he slept.

The teenager, Liam Spahnle-Bailey, was hit by the shots after a shootout in a nearby unit, the police department of Gresham said in a press release.

According to the police, the paramedics, shortly after the shootout, were taken to a nearby hospital at 1:30 a.m., but shortly after his arrival, a nearby hospital was declared dead.

Officers found another person who had also been hit by the shots nearby. The Gresham police said in a press release that the person was taken to a local hospital in order to be treated for serious but not life -threatening injuries.

On Monday, Liam's father William Spahnle and 19-year-old brother Gordon Mott-Bailey talked to Katu about the shootout. They both described how much they loved Liam.

“I let my son sleep in the air mattress in the living room and thought he was safe,” said William to Katu. “I was wrong and somehow difficult to blame myself. I didn't say it. I only wish I could do some things differently, but it doesn't matter now.”

Mott-Bailey thought about the death of his brother and said he was sad that he would never see him grown up. “He was my best friend. He is the best,” said Mott-Bailey to Katu. “I loved him as if he were his own child.”

A gofundme for the family mentioned that all the family donations will help with the unexpected death of their son.

“Liam touched the lives of many people at the age of only 13,” said the Gofundme post. “His family remembers him as loving, funny, real, as a great friend and son. His friends say that he always had a smile on his face, and he was sure that he was putting a smile on him around him.”

“This is an example of terrible violence in our community. It breaks my heart to see the loss of such a young life,” said Nathan Vasquez, district lawyer of Multnomah County in a statement. “Every time a child is lost in our community, it is devastating. But if it appears so senselessly, violent, it is absolutely annoying.”
