Brown Line on fingernail helped to catch cancer early thanks to Tikkok video early

A TIKTOK video played a key role in the cancer diagnosis of a mother after looking at a doctor about a strange marking on her fingernail, SWNS reported.

Lauren Koltcz, 45, from North Royalton, Ohio, noticed a brown line on her left mini gate, but thought that it was caused by a lack of vitamin.

“I had this nagging feeling, it was a little more than a lack of vitamins,” she said.

When the brown line became thicker, the mother spoke of two children with her nurse, who said it could be a fungal infection.

“I put a few mushroom medication on my thumb, but it didn't do anything,” she said, as SWNS reported.

In February 2025, Koltcz then noticed that the line spread over its nail.

“I started online and found some Tikok videos from dermatologists,” she recalled.

In a video, a dermatologist began to see those with brown lines on their nails to see a medical specialist.

Koltcz booked an appointment in the Cleveland Clinic, where the doctors took a biopsy of the brown area.

“I had this nagging feeling, it was a little more than a vitamin deficiency.”

The next day she got a call from her doctor Alison Vidimos, MD, who said you had to make a biopsy.

“I was worried because the pigmentation on her nail was very dark, there were different shades of brown and the place wider than 3 millimeters,” said Vidimos, the emeritus of the Clinics Department of Dermatology.

The biopsier results came back four days later.

“I just couldn't believe it. Everyone knows someone who had cancer, and now I was one of them,” said Kolcz.

The results showed that Koltcz had a subcondical melanoma – skin cancer that developed under the nail – but they had caught it in stage 0, which means that the melanoma was only in the top layer of the skin.

According to Cleveland Clinic, the subungual melanoma (nail melanoma) is a serious and rare type of skin cancer that make up 0.7% to 3.5% of all melanomas worldwide.

It can affect every nail and the discoloration, which is why it does not always occur, which is why it is so important to take note of the nail.

“If this type of cancer is caught at an early stage, there is over 95%of a survival rate of over 95%,” said Vidimos in a press release from the Cleveland Clinic. “But if it is neglected and not diagnosed in an early stage, it can spread to the lymph nodes and make the treatment more difficult.”

According to the doctor, nail melanomas are often diagnosed late because people don't think about checking their nails.

The fast operation removed the cancer from Koltcz and part of the tissue in the area to ensure that there were no cancer cells left.

“I kept thinking: 'How happy am I that I caught it in time and had such great doctors to treat it?'”

While she is currently showing no evidence of cancer, Koltcz is regularly checked with her dermatologist.
